Those who can no longer distinguish between appearance and appearance are among the victims of completely normal madness – “normal” because it is everyday and occurs umpteen times. Cervantes had it 400 years ago with his Don Quixoteand 120 years ago Richard Strauss portrayed the “knight of the sad figure”. For the first time, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra is playing this masterpiece of musical characterization, which is also a gigantic double concerto for cello and viola. Two symphonic orchestras take on the solo part. Another soloist is the bagpipe virtuoso Gunther Haußknecht, who plays Peter Maxwell Davies’ large, “staged” final solo about a sunrise wedding on the Scottish Orkney Islands. At the podium: Jonathan Darlington, an internationally acclaimed British conductor who last thrilled the Nuremberg audience in October 2020.
